An item reported that on 26 May the Dutch steam tanker Charlois of Rotterdam was hailed on 45 degrees North latitude and 39 degrees West longitude underway from Amsterdam towards Philadelphia.(1)

On 19 March 1917 sunk and torpedoed off the Norwegian coast by the German submarine U 59 underway from New York towards Rotterdam. Since 1891 Netherlands-flagged (N.V. American Petroleum Company of Rotterdam, the predecessor of ESSO). With a gross register tonnage of 2.744 tons, a net tonnage of 2.116 tons, a deadweight of 3.500 tons and as dimensions 94,5 x 11,94 x 767 (hold) metres.
