Dutch destroyer Hr.Ms. Friesland (D812) 1953-1979



Part of the Friesland-classe destroyers consisting of the Friesland, Groningen, Limburg, Overijssel, Drenthe, Utrecht, Rotterdam and Amsterdam .With a displacement of 3.050 tons were her dimensions 116 x 11,70 x 5,20 metres. There were tow separated engine rooms and two boiler rooms. The high and low pressure turbines and 4 Babcock&Wilcox boilers supplied totally 60.000 hp allowing a design speed of 36 knots although some units of this class even reached a top speed of 42 knots! In normally conditions was for economic reasons just one engine room in use. Their crew numbered 284-350 men. The armament consisted of 2x2-12cm guns, 6-4cm machine guns (later decreased to 4), 2-quad 37,cm anti submarine mortars and 2 depth charge racks. She was laid down on 17 December 1951 at the Amsterdam dockyard, launched on 21 February two years later, commissioned on 22 March 1956 and finally broken up in 1979.
