American nuclear radar picket submarine USS Triton (SSN-586) 1955-2009

The Electric Boat Division (General Dynamics Corporation), Groton, Connecticut, USA was in October 1955 ordered to built her. Her keel was laid down on 29 May 1956, launched on 19 August 1958 by Mrs. Willes A. Lent, commissioned on 10 November 1959 was she decommissioned on 3 May 1969, since then in reserve at Norfolk, stricken on 30 April 1986, since 1993 part fo the recycling program abd which was completed on 30 November 2009. Homeport New London (1959-1964 and again 1967-1969) and Norfolk (1964-1967). Her design suited for radar picket tasks dates from the 1950’s but was outdated with the introduction of the Grumman WF-2 Tracer airborne early warning aircraft operating form aircraft carriers. Since 1961 served she as a attack submarine. With a displacement of 5.963 long tons/6.059 (surfaced)-7.773/7.898 tons (submerged) were her dimensions 136,40 (over all) x 11 x 7,17 metres or 447.6 x 47 x 23.6 feet. Fitted out with two nuclear reactors allowing a speed 27 (submerged-30 (surfaced) knots. Test diving depth 210 (operation)-320 (crush) metres or 700-1.050 feet. The crew numbered 159 (attack tasks)-172 (radar picket tasks). Her armament consisted of 6-21”/53,3cm (4 x bow, 2 x stern) torpedo tubes.
