In the December 1835 edition of the The Sailors’
Magazine (p. 121) is a small account published what happened with
Portuguese naval officers. In that period there was a civil war going on in Portugal
with two crown pretenders. (1)b“No less than one admiral, fourteen captains,
seventeen commanders, and forty-six lieutenants, have recently been dismissed
from the Portuguese navy on account of their Miguelite opinions; and under the
pretext of old age, three admirals, fifteen captain, seventeen commanders, and
seven lieutenants, were placed on the retired list”.
