Privateers of the Independents harassing Portuguese merchant trade shippingaccording to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 28 September 1818

London, 22 September. According to a tiding from Bahia dated 31 July arrived there two days earlier the Margaret master Codd of London which was hold by a privateer of the Independents which hoisted the flag of Artigas armed with 16 guns and a crew of 134 men. This privateer captured the Portuguese brig Globo coming from Calcutta underway towards Lisbon and of which crew 15 men went on board of the Margaret which brought them to Halifax. Another Portuguese brig the Eugenio which left for Bahia towards the Indies returned due to the loss of her mizzen and was pursued by the same privateer until the entrance of the bay. The Portuguese government possessed none armed vessel to act against the privateer. The merchants came together in a meeting but had yet nothing decided.
