Letters from Ancona dated 4 July using tidings from the Levant reported that
Grivas (1) was still on board of the French corvette la Diligente which sailed
to the Archipelago with the purpose to cruise there.(2) According to the
newspapers of Toulon dated 11 July were rumours going on that the Prince de
Joinville was ordered to return immediately towards France while the emperor of
Morocco agreed with the French demands. Letters from Oran dated 2 July however
reported that the squadron was anchored off Mers el Kebir waiting for the
return of the steamship le Phare which was sent with an ultimatum to the
emperor.(3
