French navy blockaded Mexican harbours according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 28 May 1838

Via England arrived tidings from Mexico extracted from letters dated New York until 7 May. The blockade by the French navy all ready started 16 April and the harbour of Vera Cruz was completely empty. Here and in other harbours ship flying a neutral flag were allowed to depart with 14 days. Neutral ships which had no knowledge of the blockade were however not to be hold up or captured. The French squadron was to be strengthened by ships coming from Havana and Martinique. Master Viaud of the merchant ship Anaïs which arrived at Bordeaux brought with him tidings from Vera Cruz dated until the evening of 12 April. Mr. Deffaudis on board of the 64-gun frigate l’Iphigénie captain Bazoche continued the negotiations. The other 5 French brigs were also lying there.
