The Standard Oil Company needed more tankers according to the Dutch newspaper Het Vaderland morning edition dated 11 June 1941

Farish, director general of the Standard Oil of New Jersey announced that Standard Oil intended to found a own shipyard for building 36 tankers. At the same time was the laying of a pipeline between South Texas and the harbour of Philadelphia considered with a transport capacity of 225,000 barrels oil. The morning edition dated 17 May reported that the increasing shortage of oil forced the Standard Oil Company to use more and more pipelines between the petroleum fields and the harbours. As a result of this was negotiated with 4 companies responsible for the transport out of the harbours to other destinations. Using pipelines resulted in an availability of tanker cargo capacity for the longer distance which otherwise was to be reserved for a longer period while used between the oilfields and the harbours. Sadly enough was the oil price influenced by this decision and increased the cost with 64 dollar cents for a ton of crude oil.
