An item dated Boston the20th reported
that the ten submarines to be built by the Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation
at Quincy for
British account were to be launched in June five months after theirs keels were
laid down. The trials were to be executed soon afterwards. In principle was it
possible to commission the submarines on 1 July. The next phrase in the news
item is afterwards remarkable. It was not necessary to have the submarines completed
for the end of the war.(1). Until then was in the USA normally 2 years needed for
building a submarine.
Note
1. We know now that this was just the second year of what became as the
First World War (29 July 1914-armistice 11 November 1918).
