item referred to a letter written by captain Jacob A. Howland written at Valparaiso, Chile
on 2 December 1874 reporting that he heard that the American bark Morning Star
captain Potter of New Bedford arrived at Tome, Tacalhuano. Potter needed to
complete his crew while 15 men deserted when she visited San Carlos.
