Austrian central battery ship Kaiser Max 1874-1920


Of the Kaiser-Max-class with as sister ships the Don Juan d’Austria and the Prinz Eugen. Laid down on 14 February 1874 at the shipyard Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino at Triest, launched on 28 December 1875, completed on 26 October 1876, stricken on 30 December 1904, since serving as accommodation ship at Cattaro Bay and finally handed over to Yugoslavia in 1920 and renamed Tivat. In fact was this a condemned wood-built steam frigate which was converted into an iron-built  central battery/casemate ship. The original engines were used except for the boilers. Of the original sail area of 1633,15 square metres remained after the conversion just 1156, 60 square metres. After her conversion she had a displacement of 3.548 tons and as dimensions 73,23 (waterline0-75,87 (over all) x 15,25 x 6,15 metres or 240’3”-249’x 50’x 20’2”. The 2 cylinder 2755 ihp engine allowed a speed of 13,28 knots. Her crew numbered 400 men. The armament consisted of 8-21cm gun, 4-9cm guns, 2-7cm guns,6-4,7cm quick firing guns,3-4,7cm machineguns, 2-2,5cm machineguns and finally 4-35cm torpedo tubes (1-bow, 1 stern and on each beam 1).
