William Doxford and Sons Ltd., Sunderland, England ordered their chief draughtsman Arthur Havers to design the first turret ship after building in 1893 a whaleback ship. Of the more as 180 ships which were built according to the design Doxford himself built 176 especially for the line voyage and tramp service. Main advantage was that due to the shape less tolls had to be paid.
