British Parliament member referred to the American monitor USSS Miantonomoh when he stated that the USA ruled the waves according to the Dutch newspaper De grondwet dated 14 June 1898
This newspaper published a pencil drawing of the American monitor USS Miantonomoh with the small subtitle she was a new fashioned 2-turret monitor although her building already started in 1862 and with her completing after the Civil War. She was the first monitor crossing the Atlantic Ocean and when she appeared said a British Parliament member that she caused American superiority at sea. Since then was she rebuilt of steel.(1)

Her building at the shipyard of John Roach&Son, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA was ordered on 23 June 1874, laid down in the same year, launched on 5 December 1876, commissioned on 6 October 1882, decommissioned on 21 December 1907, laid up at Philadelphia, allowed to be used as target on 17 December, stricken on 31 December 1915 but not earlier as a hulk sold (to be broken up) to J.G. Hitner and W.F. Cutler, Philadelphia, USA on 26 January 1922. With a displacement of 4.054 tons/3.990 long tons and as dimensions 80,19 x 16,87 x 4,42 metres or 263’1” x 55’4”x 14’6”. Speed 10 knots. A crew numbering 150 men. Her armament consisted 2c2-25cm/10” breech loading riffles, 2-10cm/4” rifles and 2-6pd guns.
