American ship Avon burned by the Confederate CSS steamship Florida according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant dated 14 May 1864

An item dated Plymouth 11th reported that the American ship Avon captain Howes underway from Holland Island (South Sea) loaded with guano underway towards Queenstown, England on 20 March on 14.40 North latitude and 33 West longtitude was burned by the Confederate CSS steamship Florida (1).

1. Launched in 1862, commissioned in the Confederate States Navy on 17 August 1862, captured by the Union forces on 7 October 1864 in Bahia, Brazil and finally sunk on 28 November 1864 caused by a collision with the troop ferry Alliance.
