Australian merchant ships were to be armed according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad 1939 no. 4

An item reported that 55 Australian merchant ships would be armed as defence against light armed warships. Of the 55 ships were 33 armed with 2 guns, the others with just one. The costs were 50.000 pound sterling al doubt the reporter if that figure was correct.
