Preliminary design for an American navy supply ship No. 1 1915


Drawing (S 884-077) made for a possible building for the US Navy under the Fiscal Year 1917. The regular crew numbered 135 men to which another 25 men were added when coals was used. Fitted out with extra accommodation for 40 enlisted men. Displacement 8.500 tons and as dimensions 440’0” (waterline) x 55’.2½” (waterline) x 20’8”. The minimum speed was 14 knots. The armament consisted of 4-5” R.F. guns. The displacement of 8.500 tons was calculated as follows: hull complete 3.345 tons, hull fittings 493 tons, steam engineering 621 tons, reserved feed, supply 140 tons, battery 58 tons, ammunition and ordnance stores 55 tons, equipment and equipment stores 156 tons, outfit and stores 250 tons, coal full supply 1.725 tons, fuel oil full supply 1.000 tons and shipments&margin 657 tons.

Source the so-called Spring Styles Book 1 (March 1911-September 1925). Naval History and Heritage Command. Lot S-584. Preliminary designs prepared by mostly civilians working at the Bureau of Construction and Repair (succeeded by the Bureau of Ships nowadays the Naval Sea Systems Command) under supervision of naval architects of the Navy Construction Corps. A major part of the drawings is presented to the General Board which adviced the Secretary of the Navy.
