Greek liberty ship (ex-Arthur M. Huddell 1943-2008) Hellas Liberty 2008-


Her building with MCE hull number 1215 was ordered at the St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company, Jacksonville, Florida, USA laid down on 25 October 1943 and thanks to overtime of the labourers launched on 7 December 1943, completed on 16 December 1943, converted into pipe carrier in summer 1944, pipes she transported were used for constructing the fuel pipeline under the English Channel in the so-called Operation Pluto, necessary for the invasion which followed in Normandy, France by the Allied forces, laid up after 1945 at Sunsay Bay, chartered by AT&T and converted into a cable transport and -layer in 1956, again laid up at St. James River and now reclassified as a barge in 1984, since then cannibalized for keeping another liberty ship the John W. Brown in good condition, handed over to Greece, renamed Hellas Liberty departed she Norfolk, Virginia, USA towards Piraeus harbour, Greece, where she was converted into a museum ship in 2009-2010 where the cannibalized parts were replaced and since June 2010 open for visitors.

Displacement 14.257 tons (original) and as dimensions 134,6 x 17,3 (moulded) x 7,7 (original) metres or 441’6” x 56‘10.75”x 25’3.25”. Speed was 11 knots with the triple expansion reciprocating 2.500 shp engine and a range of 19.000 nautical miles.
