American torpedo test vessel USS Vesuvius grounded to prevent sinking according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1913-1914 no. 4


An item reported that the American torpedo test vessel USS Vesuvius on 19 May [1913] was hit by a torpedo which returned after her launching in the Narragansett Trench and she had be ran ashore. After temporarily repairs came she the same day free, towed by the torpedo boats Morris and Gwin.(1)

1, This must be the so-called dynamite cruiser designed and built for testing large dynamite guns. Laid down by William Cramp and Son Ships and Engine Building company, Philadelphia, USA in September 1887, launched on 28 April 1888, commissioned on 2 June 1890 and finally was the sale approved on 21 April 1922. Subcontracted by the Pneumatic Dynamite Gun Company, New York, USA.
