British government chartering large number of merchant ships according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1899-1900 no. 10

An item reported that since 8 October the British government chartered 159 private owned steamships from 56 different companies with a capacity of around 740. 000 tons to transport troops, artillery, horses, stores and so on. The ships differs quite dealing with their measurement like the Medic of 12.000 ton and the Corinhia of 1.330 tons.(1)

1. At the moment was in South Africa the Second Boer War (11 October 1899-31 May 1902) going on and were continuously transports with troops on board sent by the British government.
