Harbour of Durban, South Africa became accessible for largest ships according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1899-1900 no. 10

An item referred to the Mittheilungen reporting that the harbour of Durban, South Africa in the latest time was really improved. Instead of smaller ships as in the past were now the largest steamships able to enter the harbour. The depth was increased to 8,2 metres. Recently visited on one single day even 18 ships the harbour. The disembarking the troops  became now very easy.(1)

1. At the moment was in South Africa the Second Boer War (11 October 1899-31 May 1902) going on and were continuously transports with troops on board sent by the British government.
