US Navy decided to number instead of naming her torpedo boats according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1896-1897 no. 8

An item referred to the magazine Le Yacht reporting that the US Navy decided that from then on all torpedo boats were to be numbered with as result that 3 of the 21 had a name, namely the Cushing, Ericson and Stiletto.
