American USS ram Katahdin executed her contractor trials according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1895-1896 No. 4


An item reported that the American USS ram Katahdin on 26 March executed her preliminary or so-called contractors trial with as results 155 pound steam pressure, 142 revolutions, vacuum 26ih and with natural draft 3.935 ihp, medium speed 17,82 knots, with the official trial was the required minimum speed 17 miles and with forced draught a horsepower of 4.600 ihp. The draught during the contractors trial was not known but was probably less as during the official trial.(1)

1. Launched at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine on 4 February 1893, launched on 20 February 1896, commissioned on 8 October 1898, stricken on 9 July 1909 and sunk as a target in September 1909 off Rappahannock Spit, Virginia. Built according to the ideas of  Daniel Ammen (15 May 1820 Brown County, Ohio-11 July 1898 Washington) served in the US navy during the Civil War and afterwards leaving in 1878 actual service in the rank of rear admiral. He was also author of maritime oriented publications. For the Katahdin-design he used the designs of the British torpedo ram HMS Polyphemus.
