German protected cruiser SMS Kaiserin Augusta 1890-1920


Designing started in 1887 for a cruiser to be used as a colonial cruiser and as scout cruiser. Laid down at the Germaniawerft, Kiel, Germany in 1890, launched on 15 January 1892, commissioned on 17 November 1892, due to design faults decommissioned 21 June 1893, reclassified as cruiser 2nd class and decommissioned on 3 April 1895, on gunnery training ship since outbreak First World War in 1914, decommissioned on 14 December 1918, stricken on 1 October 1919, sold to the Norddeutsche Tiefbauges, Berlin, Germany and broken up at Kiel-Nordmolein 1920.

Displacement 6.318 tons and as dimensions 122 (between waterline) 123,2 (over all) x 15,6 x 6,48 metres or 404 x 51 x 21.3 feet. Three 3 cylinder triple steam expansion engines and 8 double cylindrical boilers .Speed 21 knots. Coal bunker capacity 810 tons. With a speed of 12 knots a  range of 3.240 nautical miles. Horsepower 12.500 (standard)-14.015 (trial) hp. Crew numbered 430 men. Armour consisted a 7cm/2.8” thick deck and a conning tower protected by 2 (horizontal)-5cm (vertical) thick armour. Original temporarily armament 4-15cm/5.9” guns, 8-10,5cm/4.1” guns, 8-8,8cm/”3.5” guns, 4 machineguns and 5-35cm/14” torpedo tubes. In 1896 armed with 12-15cm new model guns. Armament as gunnery training ship 1-15cm, 4-10,5cm guns, 5-8,8cm guns.
