New Zealand battle cruiser New Zealand 1910-1922



Of the Indefatigable-class battle cruisers. Funded by the government of New Zealand and presented to the United Kingdom although she was not earlier completely paid in the 1944-1945 financial year. Laid down by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering, Govan, Scotland on 20 June 1910, launched on 1 July 1911, commissioned in the Royal British Navy on 19 November 1912, paid off and in reserve since 15 March 1920and considered to be outdated regarded the newest battle cruisers and sold to be broken up on 19 December 1922.

Displacement 18.800 (normal)-22.490 (deep load) tons and as dimensions 179,9 x 24,4 x 8,2 metres or 590.3½ x 80 x 27 feet. Parsons direct drive steam turbines and 31 Babcock&Wilcox water tube boilers supplied via 4 shafts 49.000 (trials)-44.000 (design) shp allowing a speed of 25 (design)-26,39 (trials) knots and a range of 6.690 nautical miles with a speed of 10 knots. Coal bunker capacity 3.300 tons and fuel oil bunker capacity of 860 tons. Her crew numbered 800 men. The armament consisted of 4x2-30,5cm/12” Mk X breech loading guns, 16x1-10,2cm/4” Mk VII breech loading guns and 2-45cm/18” submerged torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 10,2-15,2cm/4-6”, 2,5-6,4cm/1-2.5”, 6,4cm/2.5” torpedo bulkheads and the barbettes, turrets and conning tower protected by respectively 17,8cm/7”, 17,8cm/7” and 10,2-25,4cm/4-10”.
