Main guns of American battleship USS Maryland successfully tested according to the Dutch newspaper De Maasbode dated 14 June 1923


An item reported that the US department of navy at Washington, USA received confidential tidings dealing with the successful tests of the 16” guns of the battleship Maryland.(1)

Building ordered in 5 December 1916, laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 24 April 1917, launched on 20 March 1920, commissioned on 21 July 1921, damaged during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1942, decommissioned on 3 April 1947 and sold to be broken up on 8 July 1959. Nicknamed Old Mary and Fighting Mary. Of the Colorado-class consisting of the Colorado, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington preceded by the Tennessee-class and succeeded by the South Dakota and North Carolina-classes.
