Italian protected cruiser Quarto 1909-1940
Designed by lieutenant commander Giulio Truccone to be used as a scout cruiser. Laid down at the Regia Marine dockyard at Venice, Italy on 14 November 1909, launched on 19 August 1911, completed in early 1913, commissioned on 31 March 1913, stricken on 5 January 1939, used for weapon tests and finally sunk during tests with a MT explosive motorboat executed in in November 1940.
Displacement 3.271 (normal)-3.442 (full load) tons and as dimensions 126 (waterline)-131,6 (over all) x 12,8 x 4,1 metres or 413-432 x 42 x 13 feet. The machinery consisted of 4 Parsons steam turbines and 10 Blechynden boilers (8 oil fuelled and coals fuelled) delivering 25.000 (design)-29.215 (trials) shp via 4 shafts and 4 screws allowing a speed of 28 (design)-28,61 (trials) knots. With a speed of respectively 15 and 28 knots was the range 2.300 respectively 588 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 247 men (included 13 officers). The armament consisted of 6x1-12c,/4.7” L/50 guns, 6-7,6cm/4.7” L/50 guns, 2-45cm/18” torpedo tubes placed on deck and 200 naval mines. The armour consisted of a 3,8cm/1.5” thick deck and the conning tower was protected by 10cm/3.9”.
