Laid down as the collier USS Jupiter (AC-3) at the Mare Island Navy Yard on 18 October 1911, launched on 14 August 1912, commissioned on 7 April 1913, conversion approved on 11 July 1919, decommissioned at Hampton Roads, Virginia, USA on 24 March 1920, converted at the Navy Yard, Norfolk, renamed USS Langley (CV-1) on 11 April 1920, reclassified as fleet aircraft carrier on 21 April 1920, recommissioned on 20 March 1922, decommissioned on 25 October 1936, overhauled and converted into a seaplane tender at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, USA, reclassified as a seaplane tender (AV-3) recommissioned on 21 April 1937 and unable to return safe to home being damaged after a Japanese air attack scuttled by her escorting destroyers on 27 February 1942. She had been underway towards Java, Dutch East Indies to deliver there P-40 fighters. A day later was the Battle in the Java Sea where the ABDA fleet commanded by the Dutch rear admiral Karel Doorman was destroyed by the Japanese. Nickname Covered Wagon.
As the Jupiter with a displacement of 19.670 tons and as dimensions 165,2 x 19,9 x 8,4 metres or 542 x 65.5 x 27.8 feet. The machinery of General Electric turbo-electric and 3 boilers supplying 7.200 shp allowing a speed of 15,5 knots and with a speed of 10 knots a range of 3.500 nautical miles. The crew numbered 163 men. The armament consisted of 4-19,2cm/4” /51 cal guns.

The machinery of General Electric turbo-electric and 3 boilers supplying 7.200 shp allowing a speed of 15,5 knots and with a speed of 10 knots a range of 3.500 nautical miles. The crew numbered 163 (Jupiter)-468 (Langley) men. The armament consisted of 4-19,2cm/4” /51 cal guns and she carried 36 aircraft with her for which she was fitted out with a catapult and an elevator.
