An item dated Paris, France 3rd February reported that the naval commission of the French House of Representatives asked for an immediately start of building 2-35.000 tons battleships (1) aside of the program 1938. This was necessary as response on the building of two similar battleships by Italy (2). France recently completed 2-26.000 tons battleships (3) and 2-35.000 tons battleships were now being built.
Notes
1. The Richelieu-class consisting of the Richelieu, Jean Bart, both completed, the Clemenceau laid down but never completed and the Gascogne of which the building even never started, had a design displacement of 35.000 tons and a 2x4-38cm/15” /45 Modèle guns.
2. The Littorio-class consisting of the Littorio, Vittorio Veneto, Roma and Impero with an main armament of 3x3-15” guns and a displacement of 45.236-45.485 tons.
3. The Dunkerque-class consisting of the Dunkerque (commissioned on 15 April 1937) and Strasbourg (commissioned on 15 September 1938), which were built as a response of Deutschland-class pocket battleships built Germany.
