Italian battleship Re Umberto 1894-1920

Of the Re Umberto-class consisting of the Re Umberto, Sardegna and Sicilia, although the Sardegna was considered to be a subclass. Preceded by the Ruggiero di Lauria class and succeeded by the Ammiraglio di Saint Bon class. Designed by Benedetto Brin.

Laid down at the Castellammare Naval Shipyard on 10 July 1894, launched on 17 October 1888, completed on 16 February 1893, stricken on 10 May 1914, laid up at Genoa, Italy in 1912, used as depot ship, stricken on 10 May 1914, still used as depot ship, converted into a floating battery and serving at Brindisi, Italia and Valona, Albania since 9 December 1915 and finally stricken on 4 July 1920.

Displacement 13.892 (normal)-15.702 (full load) tons and as dimensions 127,6 (over all) x 23,44 x 9,29 metres or 418’7.5” x 76’10.5”x 30’9”. The machinery consisted of two vertical compound steam engines and 18 coal fired cylindrical fire-tube boilers supplied 19.500 ihp allowing with the 2 screws a speed of 18,5 knots. With a speed of 10 knots varied the range between the 4.000-6.000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 733 men. The armour consisted of a belt with a thickness of 10,2cm/4”, a 7,62cm/3” thick deck and with the barbettes and conning tower protected by respectively 34,9cm/13.75” and 30,2cm/11.88”. The armament consisted of 2x2-34,3cm/13’5“ /30 guns (fore and aft), 8x1-15,2cm/6” /40 al guns, 16x1-11,9cm/4.7” (mounted in casemates in the upper deck), 20x1-4,7cm/2.2” six pd guns, 10x1-3,7cm/1.5” guns and 5x1-45cm/17.7” surfaced torpedo launchers.
