American light cruiser USS Milwaukee (CL-5) 1917-1944 and Russian Murmansk 1944-1949

Part of the Omaha-class light cruisers consisting of the Omaha, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Raleight, Detroit, Richmond, Concord, Trenton, Marblehead and Memphis, preceded by the Chester-class and succeeded by the Brooklyn-class. Building awarded on 27 August 1917, laid down at Todd Dry Dock&Construction Company on 13 December 1918, launched by Mrs. Rudolph Pfeil on 24 March 1922, commissioned on 20 June 1923, loaned to the Soviet Union between 20 April 1944 and renamed Murmansk, returned to the USA on 16 March 1949 and sold to the American Shipbreakers Incorporation, Wilmington, Delaware, USA to be broken up in 10 December 1949.

Dimensions 7.160 (standard) tons and as dimensions 169,32 x 16,87 x 4,11 metres or 555’6” x 55’4” x 13’6”. The 4 geared steam turbines and 12 Yarrow boilers supplied 90.ooo shp allowing a speed f 35 knots and with a speed of 10 knots a range of 6.500 nautical miles. The crew numbered 458 men. The armour consisted of a 7,6cm/3” thick belt, a 3,8cm/1.5” thick deck, 3,8cm/1.5”-7,6cm/3” thick deck and the conning tower protected by 3,8cm/1.5” thick armour. The armament consisted of 2x2&8x1-15,2cm/6” guns, 4x1-7,6cm/3” anti aircraft guns, 2x3&2x2-53,3cm/21” surfaced torpedo tubes and originally 224 mines (in early stage removed to create more crew accommodation. Could carry two floatplanes with her and was fitted out with two catapults for launching.
