British Royal Navy wanted to get rid of aged battleships and monitors according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1901-1902 no. 10

HMS Inflexible

An item reported that the British Royal Navy intended to stricken that year from the Navy list the aged battleships Temeraire (1), Inflexible (2) , Dreadnought (3), Ajax (4), Agamemnon (5), Glatton (6), Gorgon (7), Hecate (8) etc. while their maintenance was to pricey for the useless ships. Some ships which recently undergone costly repairs were kept for short time in active service. The 30 years earlier built 3.480 coastal defence ship Cyclops (9) with a speed of just 10 miles was also to be broken up.

1. Laid down at Chatham Dockyard on 18 August 1873, launched on 9 May 1876, completed on 31 August 1877 and broken up on 26 May 1921.
2. Laid down at Portsmouth Dockyard on 24 February 1874, launched on 27 April 1876, commissioned on 5 July 1911 and broken up in 1903. Built as a answer on the Italian battleships Duilio and Dandolo which had a main armament of 4-45cm/17.7” guns. She was armed with 2x2-40,64cm/16” muzzle loading rifles.
3. Ex-Fury, launched at Pembroke Dock on 8 March 1875, hulked in 1903, sold in 1908 and breaking up started in 1908.
4. Laid down at Pembroke Dockyard on 21 March 1876, launched on 10 March 1880, completed on 30 March 1883, commissioned on 30 April 1885, decommissioned in November 1901 and sold to be broken up in March 1904. Part of the Ajax-class.
5. Laid down at Chatham Dockyard on 9 May 1876, launched on 17 September 1879, completed on 29 March 1883 and broken up in 1903. Part of the Ajax-class.
6. Laid down at Chatham Dockyard on 10 August 1868, launched on 8 March 1871, completed on 24 February 1872 and broken up in 1903. Breastwork monitor.
7. Of the Cyclops-class breast work monitors consisting of the Cyclops, Hydra, Hecate and Gorgon, preceded by the Rupert and succeeded by the Conqueror-class. Laid down by Palmers Shipbuilding, Jarrow, England on 5 September 1870, launched on 14 October 1871, completed on 19 March 1877, commissioned in April 1872, decommissioned in 1901 and sold to be broken up on 12 May 1903.
8. Of the Cyclops-class breast work monitors consisting of the Cyclops, Hydra, Hecate and Gorgon, preceded by the Rupert and succeeded by the Conqueror-class. Laid down by J.&W. Dudgeon, Cubitt Town, London, England on 5 September 1870, launched on 30 September 1871, commissioned in April 1872, completed on 24 May 1877, decommissioned in 1901 and sold to be broken up on 12 May 1903.
