Preliminary design for the American Montana-class battleships dated 9 July 1940

Iowa-class

Montana-class

The design dated 9 July 1940 was drawn of the General Board and is in fact a mixture of the Iowa-class battleship (outboard profile+superstructure) and the Montana-class (hull profile). Originally the Montana-class would start with BB -65. When however of the preceding Iowa-class in stead of 4 six vessels were to be built (Illinois BB-65 and Kentucky BB-66) started the Montana-class with BB-67. Three turrets (2 fore and 1 aft). The never completed Montana-class was to consist of the Montana (BB-67), Ohio (BB-68), Maine (BB-69), New Hampshire (BB-70) and Louisiana (BB-71).
