British Royal Navy ordered building of nine destroyers of improved Ardent-class design according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1895-1896 No. 6

An item reported that for account of the British Royal Navy nine destroyers of an improved Ardent design (1) with a speed of 30 miles were to be built of nickel steel. The ships were first ordered by the shipyards of Laird, Thornycroft and Yarrow. Yarrow refused the order with as result that the first two shipyards each built 4 ships and Thomson, Glasgow, Scotland one.

Note
1. The Ardent-class consisting of the Ardent, Boxer and Bruizer, preceded by the Ferret-class and succeeded by the Charger-class was built by Thornycroft. Displacement 269 tons and a speed of 27 knots.
