France wanted to built a battleship stronger then the British ones according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië dated 29 October 1907

French Courbet-class

British HMS Dreadnought

An item dated Paris, France 28th reported that the supreme naval council decided to built a battleship (1) which was much stronger then the dreadnoughts.(2)

Notes
1. The Courbet-class, preceded by the Danton-class and succeeded by the Bretagne-class. This were the first French dreadnought battleships built between 1910-1914 with a displacement of 23.475 (standard)-25.579 (full load) tons and a main armament of 6x2-30,5cm/12” Mle 1910 guns.
1. The British HMS Dreadnought had a displacement of 18.410 (normal)-21.060 (deep load) tons and a main armament of 5x2-30,5cm/12” guns. She was succeeded by the Bellerophon-class built between 1906-1909 with a displacement of 18.88-22.102 (full load) tons and a main armament pf 5x2-30,5cm/12” Mk X guns.
