US Navy intended to repeat comparing tests with the scout cruisers according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1909-1910 no. 6

An item referred to the magazine Scientific American which supported to repeat the comparing tests of the scout cruisers. Returning from Madeira steamed the ships during 5 days over the Atlantic Ocean with out trying what their maximum speed was. The medium speed over the 5 days was 13,8 miles. Strangely was the coal consumption the opposite of the earlier comparing tests executed as sea. The daily consumption of the Salem was 90 tons, of the Birmingham 110 ton and of the Chester 130 ton.
