Italian protected cruiser Stromboli visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië dated 11 December 1901

An item reported that the harbour of Sabang, Dutch East Indies was visited by for the Italian warship Stromboli (1) bunkering coal and water. (2)

Another Dutch East Indies newspaper De locomotief dated 5 November confirmed the visit of the Stromboli underway from Penang, Malaysia towards Colombo, Ceylon, but wondered if this visit was also a sort of reconnaissance if Sabang was useful in times of war.

1. Of the Etna-class protected cruiser, laid down on 27 September 1883, launched on 4 February 1896, commissioned on 21 March 1888 and sold to be broken up in 1911.
2. The Stromboli visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies between 8-11 October 1901 according to the Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1901-1902.
