New design made for Swedish coastal defence ship Oskar II according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1937 No. 3


An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau dated February 1937 reporting that as replacement of the Swedish coastal defence ship Oskar II a new design of such a ship was drawn. With a displacement of 7,685 tons and as dimensions 136 x 22 x 5,5 metres was she to be built within 4 yours. Machinery consisted of 2 turbines allowing a speed of 24 knots. Two armoured decks and a armour belt which was thicker than the one of the Sverige. The armament was to consist of 2x2-28cm/11” guns, 2x2-12cm/4.7” guns, 10-2,5cm/1” anti aircraft guns and 10 machineguns.(1)

1. Laid down at Lindholmens Var, Gothenborg, Sweden 29th March 1903, launched 6 June 1905 and completed April 1907. Since February 1960 she was used as a school hulk until 1974. The original design was that of a slightly altered Aran-class but the Swedish parliament decided in 1901 to order a complete designed ship with more guns, armour and higher speed. In May 1903 was this new design ready.
