The harbour of Burgas, Bulgaria according to an American intelligence report dated 17 October 1956

In the Second World War were the USA and the Soviet Union allies against the Axis powers. Tensions grew between the Western powers (including the USA) and the Soviet Union and satellite states just 2 years after the war ending in a period called the Cold War, not earlier ending as in 1991. Both blocs were active in acquiring intelligence about their fleets and harbours-shipyards.

An item reported that loaded ships with a capacity measuring between 10.000-12.000 tons could be docked. At the same time and place could 4-5 tons with a capacity of 10.000 tons be docked. A new dock was under construction although the activities went slow. Facilities consisted of 2-3 small tugs. A dredger and 1 crane were involved in embanking a sector of the harbour. Elsewhere in the same report was spoken van 5 cranes each with a lifting capacity of around 3 tons, The harbour was 24 hours at work with apparently a sufficient number of labourers to realize this.
