Griffiths torpedo tested in the Thames according to the magazine The Engineer dated 10 August 1877

An item reported that a new kind of torpedo designed by mechanic Griffiths was tested in the river Thames at Woolwich. The tests were ended successful. Comparable with the Harvey torpedoes although the Griffiths’ torpedoes was superior while it could be steered to almost any desired angle at port and starboard sides despite the distance with just the help of 2 light lines. Griffiths was a labourer of the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich who also invented an outrigger torpedo of which the pope could b unexpended using a self-acting telescope.
