Tests with Whitehead fish torpedoes in Germany failure according to the Dutch Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemagt 1876-1877

An item referred to the magazine The Engineer dated 3 August 1877 reporting that the tests in Germany with the Whitehead fish torpedoes were such disappointing that the admiralty decided to stop temporarily with torpedo boats using this kind of torpedoes.(1)

1. The article in the The Engineer stated this item. The tests were executed in the presence of general von Stocks, chief of the German admiralty. Its became clear that even the slightest current was able to influence the course of the torpedo even on a small distance. Albrecht von Stosch (20 April 1818 Koblenz, Germany-29 February 1896 Oestrich, Germany), general of the infantry and admiral, was head of the admiralty between 1 January 1872-20 March 1883 and succeeded by Leo von Caprivi. The factory of White was sitaued at Fiume, Austra-Hungary.
