An item referred to a tiding received from Washington, USA reporting that the US Navy Department the loss of the gunboat Asheville south of Java, Dutch East Indies announced.(1)

Building ordered and awarded on 29 August 1916, laid down by Charleston Naval Shipyard, North Charleston, South Carolina, USA on 9 June 1917, launched on 4 July 1918, commissioned on 6 July 1920 and while underway from the Dutch East Indies towards Australia destroyed by Japanese destroyers on 3 March 1942. Her sole survivor died in in a prisoner-of-war-camp.
