An item reported that the US Navy Department decided to salvage the wreck of the French steamship Normandie and repair her. For this purpose was a budget of 5 million US dollar available.(1)

Passenger ship laid down by the Chantiers de Penhoët, Saint-Nazaire, France for account of Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, Le Havre, France on 26 January 1931, launched on 29 October 1932, interned in the USA on 3 September 1939, December 1941 purchased by the US Navy to be converted into the troop transport Lafayette although earlier planned into an aircraft carrier, heavily damaged when a fire broke out on board on 9 February 1942and capsized in the harbour of New York, salvaged and righted on 7 August 1943, reclassified as an aircraft and transport ferry APV-4 on 15 September 1943, although docked never repaired while the damage was too huge, stricken on 11 October 1945 and sold to be broken up on 3 October 1946.
