An item dated Marine Rundschau dated September 1938 reported that the navy commanding officer of Dakar, Senegal with the rank of captain received now the title and privileges of a division chief. The naval base became more and more important with an ever increasing merchant shipping to 18 million gross register tons registered in 1927 totally 8.215 ships, The harbour was enlarged and the natural harbour was with two moles connected with the peninsula of Cape Vert supplying a safe anchorage of 100 hectares. The quays had a total length of 4 kilometres. New expansion plans were on short notice to be realized.
