Japanese battleship Kawachi sunk due to explosion according to the Dutch newspaper Het Oosten dated 19 July 1918

An item reported that in the Tokoyama Bay the Japanese battleship Kawachi (launched in 1912) of 21.420 tons sunk due to an explosion. Of the 900 men were 500 killed. The newspaper De Grondwet dated 30th reported that her crew numbered 960 men and was built at Kure, Japan.(1)

1. Of the Kawach-class consisting of the Kawachi and the Settsu, preceded by the Satsuma-class and succeeded by the Fuso-class. Building ordered on 22 June 1907 under the 1907 Warship Supplement. Laid down at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on 1 April 1909, launched on 15 October 1910, completed on 31 March 1912, sunk in 4 minutes after a magazine explosion in the Tokuyama Bay taking with her more as 600 men on 12 July 1918, stricken on 21 September 1918, later partially broken up although the major part of her hull remains while used as an artificial reef.
