New British battleships to be armed with 40,6cm guns according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1938 no. 6

King George V-class

An item referred to the magazine U.S.R, dated 14 July 1938 reported that the two British battleships to be built under the 1938 Programme were to be armed with 40,6cm/16” guns and a displacement of maximum 40.000 standard tons.(1)

1. This must be the Lion-class consisting of the Lion, Temeraire, Conqueror and Thunderer, preceded by the King George V-class and succeeded by HMS Vanguard. Displacement 41.200 (standard)-47.100 (deep load) tons and a main armament of 3x3-40,6cm/16” guns. The Lion was laid down on 4 July 1939 and the Temeraire on 1 June 1939, but both ships were never completed and broken up in 15 October 1945. The other two were cancelled.
