Australian submarine HMAS AE1 launched according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1913-1914 no. 4

An item reported the launching at Vickers, England in May [1913] of the first Australian submarine AE1 with a submerged displacement of 800 ton and as dimensions 53 x 6 metres. The machinery consisted of 2-800hp Vickers engines allowing a surface speed of 15 miles. The armament consisted of 53,3cm guns and 2 quick firing guns on mountings able to be stored in the sail. The guns were also to be used for anti aircraft fire. The AE2 was already laid down.(1)

1. Laid down on 14 November 1911, launched on 22 May 1913, commissioned on 28 February 1914 and sunk underway between Blanche Bay, Rabaul, Papua New Guinea and Cape Gazelle, Papua New Guinea on 14 September 1914.
