French minister of navy ordered to built the largest submarine ever according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1890-1891 no. 7

An item referred to the magazine The Army and Navy Gazette reported that the French minister of navy (1) ordered to begin immediately with the building of the largest submarine ever which was to be named Sirène.(2) Length was to be 131 feet. Designer was the French naval archtitect  Romazzotti (3) who built earlier the Gymnote.(4)

2. The Q5, part of the Sirène, consisting of the Sirène, Triton, Espadon and Silure, designed by Maxime Laubeuf. Laid down at Arsenal de Cherbour in May 1900, launched on 4 May 1901, completed in December  1901 and decommissioned in November 1919.
3. Gaston Ramazotti (26 July 1855 Molsheim, Bas-Rhin-18 September 1915 Paris, France), appointed director of the Cherbourg Navy Yard in 1897 where the Sirène was being built by Gustave Zédé. Ramazotti and Laubeuf conflicted over the single-double hull issue.
4. The Q1, all electric submarine, laid down on 20 April 1887, launched on 24 September 1888, decommissioned in 1908 and sold to be broken up in 1911.
