An item dated Batavia, Dutch East Indies 6the February reported the departure of the German cruisers Hertha (1) and Bussard (2) . Just two miles away from Singapore was the command transferred from vice admiral Bendemann (3) to vice admiral Geisler (4) as a direct order received from Berling, Germany.(5)

1. Ordered as the ‘K’. Laid down by AG Vulcan, Stettin, Germany with yard number 233 in 1895, launched on 14 April 1897, commissioned on 23 July 1898, stricken on 6 December 1919 and broken up in 1920. Part of the Victoria Louisa-class protected cruisers consisting of the Victoria Louise, Hertha, Freya, Vineta and Hansa, preceded by the Kaiserin Augusta and succeeded by the Fürst Bismarck.
2 Laid down by Kaiserliche Werft, Danzig as Kreuzer IV Classe C in Augst 1888, launched on 23 January 1890, commissioned on 7 October 1890, decommissioned on 25 October 1912 and broken up in 1913. Unprotected cruiser of the Bussard-class consisting of the Bussard, Falke, Seeadler, Condor and Cormoran, preceded y the Schwalbe-class and succeeded by the Gefion.
3. Felix Eduard Robert Emil Bendemann (8 August 1848, Dresden, Germany-31 October 1915 Halensee/Berlin, Germany), served in the Prussian and German Imperial navies between 1864-1907.

5. According to the Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1901-1902 visited the SMS Hertha and Bussard visited Tandjong-Priok, Dutch East Indies between 23 January-6 February 1902 and the Hertha also and Sabang, Dutch East Indies between 3-4 March 1902.
