Romanian gunboat Ghiculescu underway towards Genoa, Italy for repairs according to a CIA report dated 14 June 1950

An item reported that on 17 April at 2.00p.m. a Dutch tug passed Istanbul, Turkey underway towards Genoa, Italy while towing the Romanian gunboat Ghiculescu. The gunboat was damaged in a collision with the Italian ship Matilde Corrado in the harbour of Constanta. In February was the Italian vessel held by the Romanian government under a lien of 400.000 US dollars.(1)

1. Launched at the Arsenal, Brest, France as the Friponne-class gunboat Mignonne for the French navy in 1917, sold to Romania in 1920, captured by the Soviet Union in September 1944, commissioned in Soviet service as Angara, returned to Romania in October 1945 and finally stricken in 2002 when she was serving as a survey vessel. Displacement 344 (standard)-443 (full load) tons and as dimensions 62,1 x 7 x 2,9 metres or 203.9 x 23.0 x 9.6 feet. Speed 15 knots. Crew numbered 50 men. Original armament consisted of 2-10cm naval guns and 2-40cm depth charge throwers to which in the Second World War 4-2cm Oerlikon anti aircraft guns were added.
