British Royal Navy converted aged Admiral-class battleships into fuel oil depots according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens dated 1908 No. 4

An item reported that due the increasing need for fuel oil the British Royal Navy decided to convert some ships of the aged Admiral-class into floating fuel oil depots which were stationed along the coastlines. The first ships to be converted were the Benbow and Howe. Potential locations were Barrow, Belfast, Birkenhead, Grimsby, Harwich, Invergorden, Queensferry and Queenstown and possible also Bantry and Berehaven.
